History of Windsor Castle

Just as with many of the other castles around the UK, Windsor Castle has a long and rich history. The original structure was erected by William the Conqueror following on from his victory in 1066. This structure was part of a defensive ring he created around London, giving him a strong military advantage.

Since the 11th century, the castle has undergone a huge amount of work, commissioned by a long list of English monarchs, from King John in the 13th century, to Henry VIII in the 16th century, all the way to our reigning monarch, Elizabeth II who saw the accidental fire of 1992. This fire caused a huge amount of damage to the Upper Ward as it raged for 15 hours, leading to the need for extensive restoration efforts.

Visiting the Castle

Windsor Castle is a working royal palace, so there are areas of the castle which are not accessible to the public. However, the areas you can visit are extensive, so there is plenty to see and do during your visit.

The castle is home to an incredible Royal Collection with some of the most important works of art on display. You can also find the fantastic Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House which was built in the early 1920s for Queen Mary who was the wife of King George V and grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II.

There are plenty of tours you can take to learn more about the castle, and we can even arrange to have blue badge guide for you.
